Detecting user activity in android can de done very easily using ActivityRecognitionClient. You can detect user activities like Still, Running, Walking, Cycling, Tilting, Driving etc., We can see this API widely used in lot of fitness apps (like GoogleFit) to provide user activity info like number steps he is taken, the distance he is travelled.

The application mainly focuses on collecting contextual information of a subject’s alcohol drinking habits. It has the ability of figuring out user’s alcohol consumption using movement sensors on the smartphone and then, using other GPS and Bluetooth technologies that can predict a trend in the users drinking habits with members of the community. The technology that is used to predict a user’s blood alcohol level through phone sensors was developed in WPI and has featured on the local news.
