I recommend you to search for CC graphics such CC-BY or CC-BY-SA or CC0.

I reccomend OGA (OpenGameArt) there are lots of free/libre assets that can be used in open source projects and there are only free/libre assets so you just can't accidentally get proprietary assets. Their site looks bad but content is good.

If you want to search for assets on itch (because current assets are from there), I would recommend you to search on special pages that aggregate only assets with specific licenses https://itch.io/game-assets/assets-cc0 https://itch.io/game-assets/assets-cc4-by-sa https://itch.io/game-assets/assets-cc4-by. But before using something from there read more about asset pack. Sometimes you can find there asset packs that has another licenses but their authors think that their license is compatible with one of CC licenses so just check before using and ask the author if it really corresponds to the definition from CC site

P.S: Good luck you and your game. The more open source game we have the better life. Most of games on F-droid are abandoned so I hope your project won't be one of them

I don't see how this would be any different to redistributing the assets inside an APK file

I looked into it further and it seems like the author doesn't allow it to be open source. I'll switch graphics over soon
