Yes. By default javascript encodes images as png, but you can easily use jpeg by sending an extra parameter to the toDataURL function. See here: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/HTMLCanvasElement#Methods
Just open up the jquery.cropbox.js file, and change the line that has toDataURL() to toDataURL('image/jpeg')
The obvious side effect, is that the quality of the resulting image will be less than with png.
