Another good idea. I think I understand this one well enough. Though you do bring up a point about reading data about your maps. I need to test that you can do this easily. Have not tried accessing the map data from outside, so let me know if that needs work.

As per my comments in issue #2 I suggest (for setting):

//US, SO, GR selected

//US, SO, GR deselected

//interactive selection disabled for US, SO, GR
jQuery('#vmap').vectorMap('set', 'selectionEnabled', false, 'us,so,gr');

Perhaps for getting:

//selection state for only US, SO, GR retrieved as {us:true,so:false,gr:false}
jQuery('#vmap').vectorMap('get', 'selected, 'us,so,gr');

//selection state for all regions retrieved as {us:true,so:false,gr:false,gb:true,sa:false,au:false,...}
jQuery('#vmap').vectorMap('set', 'selectionEnabled');

//selection state for only US retrieved as {us:true} - or possibly just true, this needs to be thought about carefully
jQuery('#vmap').vectorMap('get', 'selected, 'us');

This same principle would again extend to other properties, e.g. color
