You will probably have to run gradle compileJava tomcatRunWar. The task tomcatRunWar does not automatically recompile changed Java classes.

No, this did not solve my problem. However, the compileJava task is executed. I can see it in the list of executed targets. When I deploy the newly created WAR-File to a standalone Tomcat, changes can be seen.
I can see the changes in the embedded tomcat when I delete the folder of the extracted WAR. As long as this folder exists, no changes are visible. The WAR is extracted within my project folder.

It works with tomcatRun task.

I assume you were using Tomcat 6 with the task tomcatRunWar. The implementation for version 6 unpacked the WAR by default which led to the fact that subsequent task runs didn't pick up the changes. I set the property unpackWar to false. This was already the case for Tomcat 7.
